Claflin Elementary Welcomes You!

 Student Achievement is #1!

Welcome to Claflin Elementary!  Claflin Elementary is served by an excellent, caring faculty and staff.  Teamwork is important to all of us, and we realize working together is the key to a successful educational program for all children.

At Claflin Elementary we offer a four-year-old preschool program, Monday-Thursday, 8:15 AM to 11:15 AM.  For the past thirteen years we have had an all-day kindergarten program.  Students in grades 1st-6th receive music and art every other day.  Physical education classes are offered on a daily basis for grades kindergarten-fourth.  Fifth and sixth grades have physical education and band every other day.  Our student-to-teacher ratio is 12-1, with two full-time para-professionals providing assistance in these classrooms.  Our students have achieved the Standard of Excellence regularly on the Kansas Reading and Math Assessments.  We have achieved Adequate Yearly Progress every year, which is a goal set by our state to meet the No Child Left Behind Act.  Students who need additional assistance in math and/or reading may receive Title 1 and/or At-Risk services.  After school homework help is available to 3rd-6th grade students three days a week for one hour.  A Summer School Academy is offered to students during the month of July to help retain reading and math skills.

Incorporating technology into our curriculum has been a goal we have set district-wide.  Currently our preschool-2nd grade classrooms are each equipped with six to eight computers with internet connectivity.  Forty-four laptops with wireless connectivity are shared between the 3rd-6th grade classrooms.  Each classroom has a mounted projector, which allows the teacher to project any image from his/her computer onto a screen.  Electronic whiteboards can be found in our 5th & 6th grade classrooms, which enhances teaching and student learning.

Renaissance Learning is a key component of our curriculum in reading and math.  Students in grades 2nd-6th are provided an hour every day to read a library book that is matched to their reading level.  At the fifth and sixth grade levels the students participate in the Accelerated Math program, which allows them to progress at their own pace.  Early literacy is so very important and we have placed extra emphasis in this area.  DIBELS testing occurs in grades PK-3rd, which monitors each child’s progress.  Students are introduced to phonics instruction through Animated Literacy and are grouped in Guided Reading Groups which meet their individual needs.  Students who need more one-on-one instruction may be placed in Title 1 or with our At-Risk teacher to help them progress.
