Claflin 5th Grader WINS Barton County Spelling Bee!!
The annual Barton County Spelling Bee was held on Saturday, February 6, 2010 in the Great Bend High School and was once again sponsored by the Great Bend Kiwanis Club. This year there were 26 students that qualified for the competition which included nine sixth-graders, nine fifth-graders, four-seventh-graders, three eighth-graders, and one fourth-grader. When the competition began only 21 students were in attendance. The emcee for the event was Paul Maneth and the prounouncer was N.R. Weber. Judges for the event were Jean Cavanaugh, Dr. David Hart, and Judy Fox. Competing from Claflin were 7th grader Carson, and fifth graders Kylee and Janae. Janae won the competition by spelling the words "vague" and "boycott". She will now advance on to the Sunflower Spelling Bee to be held on March 13 at the Barton County Community College's Fine Arts Auditorium.
