2008 Kansas Library Conference
Staff Members Present Workshop at Statewide Conference
by Dorian Hickel
April 17, 2008
The Claflin USD #354 library staff attended the annual Kansas Library Conference in Wichita from April 9 through April 11, 2008. The conference was held in the Hyatt Regency/Century II Conference Center. Mrs. Dorian Hickel and Mrs. Pam Atteberry had the opportunity to present a program at one of the workshop sessions. The program was titled “A Road Trip with Seventh Graders – GASP!” The presentation shared a 7th Grade English/Library unit for 7th graders to individually plan a road trip to visit one of the states in our country, other than Kansas. The most valuable part of the annual conference is the opportunity to network and share with other librarian/teachers the many ideas that are being used in schools across the state.
The library staff attends this conference annually to gain knowledge in the newest updates on programs like the Kan-Ed Empowered Desktop and HomeworkKansas, additional available databases, newest book titles and authors, and to learn about new technology and resources that are available to public and school libraries. The event is sponsored by the Kansas Association of School Librarians (KASL), Kansas Library Association (KLA) and Kansas Association for Educational Communications and Technology (KAECT).
Mrs. Hickel was introduced to Dandi Mackall, an author from Missouri who writes for children and adults. She currently has a book on the 2008 William Allen White book list titled Larger-Than-Life-Lara. Mrs. Atteberry was introduced to the works of Tim Raglin, an author/illustrator from Independence, Kansas. Mrs. Atteberry was also the winner of a raffle sponsored by the Kansas Library Association. What a treat! Students and staff at USD #354 will benefit from the sharing of information brought back by the library staff to use in classrooms and for personal information needs.
