The readers of last year’s William Allen White Book List attended their annual reward field trip on September 29th, 2007. The group of seventeen students and 6 sponsors went to the Kansas Cosmosphere and had a nice surprise! There were several VIP’s in the museum that day and our students had the pleasure of meeting some of them. October 2007 marks the 50th Anniversary of Space Exploration and the Cosmosphere was hosting their first weekend celebration of the month’s events.
While touring the newly renovated Space Museum, our group crossed paths with another tour that included former astronaut Ed Mitchell (who has walked on the moon!) and former astronaut and space shuttle commander, Brian Duffy. Duffy served as pilot on the Space Shuttles Atlantis and Endeavour and as the Commander on the Discovery. Also present in the VIP group was former KC Royals 3rd baseman George Brett and PGA tour veteran Matt Gogel. The students and the sponsors were excited when the group consented to have a picture taken with our students!
After a very informative tour, the students and sponsors viewed a showing of the IMAX movie “Alps.” They felt as though they had been to space and climbed a mountain all in one day. After the museum and movie they filled up on Pizza Hut food and headed home. We hope our next field trip will be as exciting!!
